Sofija Gubajdulina

Inside the score

A series of events designed to bring the audience closer to a deeper understanding of the true essence of music: an interesting opportunity for those wishing to learn how to grasp even the slightest nuances of sound. Usually proposed in conjunction with a chamber music concert, the event includes a presentation by LuganoMusica's director Etienne Reymond and, when possible, one or more of the musicians involved in the concert. In practical terms and in a language suitable for all, the particularities of the score will be highlighted, as well as the historical characteristics of the piece. This way, listening will inevitably be richer and more enjoyable during the concert.

Sofia Gubaidulina: "My desire is always to rebel, to swim against the stream"
Sofia Gubaidulina is recognised as one of the most original composers of our time, a leading representative of the Soviet avant-garde of the 1970s and 1980s, and a great opponent of the totalitarian Soviet ideology. She was born in 1931 in the Russian Republic of Tatarstan to a Russian mother and a Tatar father. For Gubaidulina, music was an escape route from the socio-political atmosphere of Soviet Russia. This is why the association with human transcendence and mystical spiritualism is so prevalent in her works. Her compositions contain these religious and mystical associations in various forms. For example, in the seventh of the Ten Preludes for Cello, her writing prompts the performer to draw a crucifix with the instrument's bow. Thanks to this encounter, the public will have the opportunity to get to better know this great contemporary composer.
