Thomas Schütte, Rings, 1977-1990, coloured wooden rings on wall. Museo d’arte della Svizzera italiana, Lugano. Gift Panza di Biumo

Thomas Schütte was born in Oldenburg, Germany, in 1954. He is an internationally renowned artist who creates sculptures, prints, photographs, works on paper and installations, using a wide variety of materials such as wood, bronze, steel, clay, glass and textiles. The installation Rings is composed of up to 500 wooden rings of the same diameter, painted in different colours and hung on the wall in an orderly but irregular pattern. The work, whose forms and dimensions may vary depending on the space in which it is exhibited, highlights the artist’s keen interest in experimentation and the relationship between art and architecture.
