Jean-Frédéric Schnyder. La pittura 2024/25
Press kit
This exhibition presents the work of an artist with a consistent, highly independent approach who has brought a breath of fresh air to contemporary painting: Jean-Frédéric Schnyder (Basel, 1945). Hailed as one of the most original, influential figures on the Swiss art scene, in his over sixty year career Schnyder has produced a distinctive body of work, maintaining a discreet yet pivotal presence on the international stage. His practice mingles humour, lyricism and experimentation, spanning a variety of genres and styles to explore everyday life with his own very free, personal outlook.
The solo exhibition at MASI brings together a new series of paintings produced by the artist over the last two years, including small en plein air landscapes created in Switzerland’s mountainous regions. These recent works are accompanied by two iconic projects: the series Billige Bilder (Low-Cost Paintings, 2000-2019) and the monumental Stilleben (Still Life, 1970).
